Gone Are the Days of My Free Coffee Shop and University Wi-Fi

I used to be the guy in college who stayed close to where the free Wi-Fi was at. I would work on the campus and at the local coffee shops. I would stay so long that sometimes a manager would ask me if I was going to buy something else. I would lose track of time working on my projects for classes and running a business to pay for my education. When I moved into my own place, I got Seattle Washington Frontier broadband Internet service. I had an apartment just out of range of signal for free wireless Internet.

I have a friend who logs into any open Wi-Fi signal he can pick up. He will sit in his car in fast-food restaurant parking lots and do his telecommuting work. I at least had the dignity to get my own Internet service when I finally moved out of the dorm in my senior year. Since I will be staying in the area, I chose a nice apartment that is affordable. I also made sure that it was at an address that would let me have the fastest broadband I could get at a residence. I do video editing and need fast download and upload speeds.

My friend is still scrounging for Wi-Fi at fast-food joints and outside of university buildings. He will set up his mobile office on good weather days at a picnic table at the university. I like the outdoor office concept, but I prefer having my own TV, refrigerator, bathroom and other stuff at my apartment. I won't be going back to scrounging for free Wi-Fi when I have high quality broadband Internet where I live now. I just am sure to set up security on my router so my scrounging friend does not try to grab free Wi-Fi off of me from the apartment's parking lot.
